Sleeping got him in trouble

Officers responding to a report of a homeless man sleeping in a restaurant in the 300 block of West University Drive early Saturday arrested him, but not for vagrancy.
The officers arrived about 12:45 a.m. and checked on the man. He had outstanding warrants, so he was taken into custody. In his backpack the officers found quantities of methamphetamines, marijuana, Xanex, drug paraphernalia and an illegal knife.
They took the man to jail on charges of manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawfully carrying a weapon. He also was held on an outstanding warrant for having an animal at large.

Other reports

500 block of Londonderry Lane - Officers responding to a report of an injured child at a hospital emergency room found a 4-year-old boy with black-and-blue belt bruises all over his backside. The mother reported that her former boyfriend whipped the boy with a belt and also hit him in the head with a hairbrush. The child's biological father took custody of him after he was treated.

1900 Denison Street - A caller reported he was following a car burglar Sunday about 1 p.m., and officers were able to stop the car. They arrested a 25-year-old man on burglary charges after stopping the vehicle he was driving.

800 block of Gregg Street - Police arrested a 26-year-old man Sunday afternoon after he called to complain that an acquaintance hit him with a croquet mallet. He said he was walking past the man's house when the man yelled at him, calling him a name. He said he yelled back at the man, calling him a name as well. He said the man chased him and hit him with the mallet. He had outstanding warrants for public intoxication and soliciting money without a  permit, so he was taken to jail. His injuries were photographed and an investigation is continuing.

West Congress Street at Elm Street - Callers notified police about 6:30 p.m. Saturday that a man displayed a 9mm pistol and then got into a PT Cruiser and left. Officers found the man walking down an alley to an apartment complex in the 1100 block of Elm Street. The man ran when he saw the officers. They caught him, and he said the pistol was a BB gun and he brandished it during an altercation with another man. They found the BB pistol in his Cruiser and charged him displaying a firearm and evading arrest.
