Two victims report rental house scam
Two different victims reported to police Tuesday that they found a house they wanted to rent on Trulia.com and later discovered the person in contact information didn't have authority to rent the house. A woman reported that she contacted someone online about the house in the 1300 block of Stuart Road and received a contract via e-mail. She signed the contract and sent it back along with a deposit on the house. But later she learned that she did not have a legitimate deal on the rental. A man reported Tuesday that he also contacted the person listed on the rental site but didn't feel right about the information he received so he tried to rent the house using another method. He too later learned that the person representing himself as a rental authority had no connection with the house. An investigation is continuing.
2300 East University Drive - A man reported Tuesday afternoon that he left his truck parked on a lot belonging to a large church. When he returned, he saw that someone had broken several windows on the truck, keyed it down one side and put dents in the body. His wallet was also missing from the truck, he said. He believes he knows the suspect.
1500 block of East McKinney Street - Someone stole a man's cell phone and a bag of his medications from a homeless shelter, he reported Tuesday.
Denton police listed 20 reports on Tuesday, including two assaults, three instances of shoplifting, one information-only report, one instance of graffiti, two vehicle burglaries, one criminal mischief, one theft, one burglary, two reports of fraud, three reports of harassment, one interference with an emergency call and one case of possession of drug paraphernalia.
