Child remains in critical condition after shooting

A 5-year-old boy remains in critical condition today in a Denton hospital after being accidentally shot in the head Saturday by another child.

Police spokesman Orlando Hinojosa said Monday that the boy remained critical with a gunshot wound in the head after an 8-year-old friend pointed a .22-caliber rifle at him and fired about 11:40 a.m. The boy and his mother live with the boy's grandparents in the 2700 block of Stockton Street, the officer said. The grandparents were at home, along with other children, but the boy's parents were at work, he said.

No charges had been filed as of Monday morning, but the investigation is continuing and charges associated with recklessly leaving a weapon for a child to find are possible. No decision has been made at this time, he said.
